The Footwear Biomechanics Group, a technical group of the International Society of Biomechanics, held the IX Footwear Biomechanics Symposium, in Stellenbosch on July 10 - 12, 2009.
The symposium had keynotes by Dr. Peter Cavanagh, Dr. Benno Nigg, and Dr. Martyn Shorten. Additional highlights also included an invited Soccer Footwear session organized by Thorsten Sterzing to coincide with the upcoming World Cup in South Africa. Also, to celebrate his retirement, Bart van Gheluwe gave a personal overview on "Foot Biomechanics and Podiatry: Research Meets the Clinical World".
There was over 60 oral and poster presentations in the symposium on a range of topics:
- fit
- pressure distribution
- running
- comfort
- gait
- impact
- stability
- etc.
The International Society of Biomechanics promotes the study of the biomechanics of movement with special emphasis on human beings; encouraging international contacts among scientists in this field, promoting knowledge of biomechanics on an international level, and cooperating with related organizations.
