Student members of the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB) are eligible for the following grants. A number of competitive grants are awarded each year, and in the year of the ISB Congress. All grant amounts are shown in US dollars. The grants available for 2014 are as follows and the required documentation and important dates are summarized in the grant table below.
1) The Matching Dissertation Grant Program (MDG):
There will be several competitive grants of $US2500 awarded for doctoral dissertation research. A condition is that the applicant will have a commitment from her/his institution or another source to provide a further matching $US2500 or equivalent. This program is applicable to those who are doctoral candidates and are seeking assistance with costs of their dissertation research.
Application forms are available here and applications are to be received by December 15 2013, with applicants being notified by February 1 2014.
Note: Recipients will be expected to present results at the next ISB Congress, (although receipt of the award does not imply any obligation that ISB will provide support to attend) and acknowledge ISB support in any publications. Recipients will be encouraged to publish their work in one of the ISB-affiliated journals.
2) The International Affiliate Development Grant Program (IADG):
This grant of up to $US2500 is offered to student biomechanists from low income or restricted currency countries to enable them to spend time in an approved, established biomechanics laboratory or to attend a relevant, approved training course.
Application forms are available here and applications are to be received by December 15 2013, with applicants being notified by February 1 2014.
Note: Students from the economically developing countries may obtain further financial assistance for congress and international travel from the EDC Projects Group. Please contact the EDC Project Officer, Dr. Andrea Hemmerich (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.), or the Affiliated Societies & Developing Countries Officer, António Veloso (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)
3) The Congress Travel Grant Program (CTG):
This grant is offered only in the years of an ISB Congress. Therefore, it will be offered in 2015 to help reduce the travel expenses to attend the XXV ISB Congress in Glasgow, Scotland (http://www.isbglasgow.com). The ISB Congress provides a wonderful opportunity for exchange of information and for meeting other scientists who can be influential in the development of new directions. By virtue of the need to move the congresses among different continents, it is often very difficult for students to afford to travel to the Congress or to pay the registration fee if they can travel. However, we will offer several travel grants (up to $US1000) who will be presenting their research results at the 2015 ISB Congress in Glasgow.
Note: Students from an institution in an EDC region will be considered for additional funding according to their submitted budget. A separate application for the EDC Congress Travel Grant Program will not be necessary. Please clearly indicate on your application that your main affiliation is with an EDC institution.
Application forms are available hereand applications are to be received by December 15 2014 and applicants will be notified by February 1 2015.
4) The International Travel Grant Program (ITG):
In order to allow student members to travel abroad to experience science in other cultures, we will offer several grants of up to $US2500 for travel related to biomechanics research. A report on the accomplishments during the trip is required by the committee.
Application forms are available here and applications will be received twice a year: December 15, 2013 and May 30 2014. Applicants will be notified by February 1 2014 and July 1 2014 respectively.
5) The Technical Group Meeting Travel Grant Program (TGTG):
This grant is offered to the student members of the ISB attending the affiliated Technical Groups. It will be offered to help reduce the travel expenses to attend meetings of the 3-D Human Movement (3DHM), the International Shoulder Group (ISG), Footwear Biomechanics Group (FBG), and Technical Group on Computer Simulation (TGCS). By virtue of the need to move the meetings among different continents, it is often very difficult for students to afford to travel to the meetings or to pay the registration fee if they can travel. However, we will offer travel grants (up to $US 500) who will be presenting their research results at the aforementioned TG meetings.
Application forms are available here and applications are to be received by April 30 2014. Applicants will be notified by June 1 2014.

Recipients will be encouraged to publish their work in one of the ISB-affiliated journals.
2) The International Travel Grant program (ITG):
In order to allow student members to travel abroad to experience science in other countries and cultures, and to build up international collaborations we will offer several grants of up to $3500 USD for travel related to biomechanics research. A relevant and feasible project must be defined, with appropriate research activities to be performed by the applicant at the host institution during the visit (typically 4-6 weeks), agreed by the applicant's supervisor and the host institution. A report on the accomplishments during the trip is required by the committee.
Applications will be received twice a year: by January 15th, 2025, and May 15th, 2025.
Applicants will be notified by March 5th, 2025 and July 1st, 2025, respectively.

Recipients will be encouraged to publish their work in one of the ISB-affiliated journals.
3) The Congress Travel Grant program (CTG):
This grant is offered only in the years of an ISB Congress. This year it will be offered to help reduce travel expenses to attend the XXX ISB Congress in Stockholm, Sweden 2025. However, we will offer several travel grants, from $600 USD up to $1200 USD, according to the distance from the Congress city. The student must be first author of the abstract and presenter of the paper.
Applications are to be received by January 31st, 2025, with applicants being notified by March 31st, 2025.
Note: Students from an institution in an EDC region will be considered for additional funding according to their submitted budget. A separate application for the EDC Congress Travel Grant Program will not be necessary. Please clearly indicate on your application that your main affiliation is with an EDC institution.
4) The Postdoctoral Fellow Congress Travel Grant program (PD_CTG):
The ISB will be supporting a postdoc congress travel grant for 2025 after increased interest following the XXIX ISB Congress in Fukuoka, Japan 2023. Many postdocs missed out on the opportunity to build their international network as the 2021 meeting in Stockholm was transitioned to a virtual meeting. The PD_CTG will be offered again this year to help reduce travel expenses to attend the in-person XXX ISB Congress in Stockholm, Sweden 2025. The ISB Congress provides a wonderful opportunity for exchange of information and for meeting other scientists who can be influential in the development of new directions. We will offer several travel grants ($500 USD each) to individuals who hold a title of postdoctoral fellow or similar trainee designation. The postdoc must be first author of the abstract and presenter of the paper. Please follow the application instructions for the Congress Travel Grant program and be sure to indicate that you are applying as a postdoc when you submit your application via email (in the subject line).
Applications are to be received by January 31st, 2025, with applicants being notified by March 31st, 2025.
5) The Technical Group Meeting Travel Grant program (TGTG):
This grant is offered to the student members of the ISB attending the affiliated Technical Group meetings. It will be offered to help reduce travel expenses to attend meetings of the 3-D Analysis of Human Movement (3DAHM), International Shoulder Group (ISG), Footwear Biomechanics Group (FBG), and Technical Group on Computer Simulation (TGCS). By virtue of the need to move the meetings among different continents, it is often very difficult for students to afford to travel to the meetings or to pay the registration fee if they can travel. However, we will offer travel grants, up to $500 USD, to the students who will be presenting their research results at the aforementioned Technical Group meetings.
Applications are to be received by February 28th, 2025. Applicants will be notified by May 1st, 2025.
6) The International Affiliate Development Grant program (IADG):
This grant of up to $3500 USD is offered to student biomechanists from low income or restricted currency countries to enable them to spend time in an approved, established biomechanics laboratory or to attend a relevant, approved training course.
Applications are to be received by January 15th, 2025, with applicants being notified by March 5th, 2025.
