About the Department of Kinesiology

The world-renowned Department of Kinesiology is one of six departments in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS). The department has 13 tenure-track faculty, 5 full-time lecturer faculty, 1 full-time undergraduate advisor, approximately 680 undergraduate majors and ~40 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Its research and teaching activities are organized into the areas of Biomechanics, Movement Neuroscience, Physiology, and Physical Activity & Health, with an array of well-equipped research laboratories within each area. Faculty are established and emerging leaders in their research fields, which range from the molecular basis of movement to community-based physical activity interventions, and on-campus leaders in teaching and educational innovation. The department boasts a highly cooperative and collegial environment that prioritizes diversity and inclusion for delivering high-caliber education and knowledge.

 

Job Summary

The Department of Kinesiology in the School of Public Health & Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a full-time, academic year (nine month), Lecturer Faculty to supervise delivery of our Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) laboratory sections. The successful candidate will work within a dynamic department to deliver student-centered learning experiences. This individual will be involved in lab management, teaching, and student support for our two large A&P courses.  

In addition to serving as a requirement for the B.S. in Kinesiology degree, our A&P courses satisfy prerequisites necessary for application to many graduate programs in the health sciences. Thus, our A&P courses serve students from across the University and Five Colleges. The person in this position will work with current A&P faculty to coordinate delivery of combined A&P lecture/lab courses. This position is responsible for oversight of lab instruction and involves both teaching and managing teaching assistants. Additional responsibilities include supply and equipment management for the A&P lab and an integrated teaching lab used for upper-level kinesiology courses. The successful applicant will teach in-person and online lecture sections of A&P.  Service work will include serving on department, school, and university committees, as needed.

Requirements

Candidates must have a professional profile appropriate for a September 1, 2023 appointment.

• A minimum of a Master's degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Biological Sciences, or related field.


• Excellent oral and written communication skills.


• Potential for fostering equity and inclusion.


• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an academic setting.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with:

• Teaching experience in-person and online.


• Experience with team-based lab management and innovative pedagogical approaches including integration of interactive lab tools.


• Evidence of ability to supervise teaching assistants.


• Experience working in a teaching laboratory setting.


• Experience teaching Anatomy & Physiology.

The anticipated start date is September 1, 2023.

 

Work Schedule

• Monday - Friday, 40 hours/week.

 

Salary Information

The University offers a competitive salary with an attractive benefits package. The minimum starting salary for a 9-month appointment in a Lecturer position at the University of Massachusetts is $57,000 and the initial two-year contract provides the opportunity to work towards a continuous appointment with a unique promotion program for Lecturers.
