Project description.

A team of physicists, engineers and biologists at the Arthropod Inspired Materials and Surfaces (AIMS) laboratory from the Department of Materials Science at Clemson University are working on the engineering biology of insect sensing devices, bridging physics, applied math, materials science and biology to understand the flight and locomotion control by insect antennae and to develop bio-inspired fiber-based micro-joysticks and gyroscopes.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Post Doctoral Fellow to start working in January 2025 on the comparative biomechanics of insect antennae.

Techniques & methods: The candidate will develop theoretical approaches to explain the biomechanics of tactile sensing and flight control by insect antennae. The AIMS lab develops the Cosserat–type models of antennae, taking into account blood flow through antennae. The project will use methods of continuum mechanics of active materials, and the developed models will be validated using the results from advanced imaging of live antennae, including X-ray imaging at ANL & BNL synchrotrons.

Requirements: PhD in mechanics, physics or applied mathematics, familiarity with methods of continuum mechanics, and flexibility to learn new theories and to work in an interdisciplinary team of researchers.

If interested, please email Prof. Konstantin G. Kornev at kkornev@clemson.edu with a statement of interest and your curriculum vitae.
